Institute of Wellbeing

A brand new eLearning programme to improve inclusive practice and wellbeing support for children and families

Increasing inclusion and wellbeing in early years settings’ is an exciting online learning programme for everyone who works with children under five, whether state-run or independent settings, also recommended for childminders and those in the voluntary and faith sectors.

Created by the Institute of Wellbeing, experts in the field of family wellbeing, the programme teaches the essentials of inclusive practice (including SEND) and wellbeing and why improving the wellbeing of children and their families is key to ensuring that children make progress in their lives, whatever their family background or personal circumstances.

The eight-module programme and refresher course gives early years professionals an understanding of inclusive practice and wellbeing, and how to help parents build a positive home learning environment for themselves and their children. It is designed to support early years’ professionals’ continuing professional development and is pending City & Guilds accreditation.

Brave Boys

“Slugs and snails and puppy dogs’ tails, that’s what little boys are made of.” Just like the nursery rhyme, boys and girls are different and prefer to learn in different ways. If you want to find out how you can make learning more fun and interesting for boys then come and book onto a Brave Boys course near you – whether it is in your nursery or at one of our open training events!

As one of the most popular training courses in NDNA’s repertoire, Brave Boys gives practitioners the skills to help boys become confident, capable and creative. Developed by one of our NDNA Early Years Experts, Brave Boys explores brain development and identifies the different ways in which boys and girls learn. Along with the course we have produced a handy A5 publication to support your learning further.

National Portage Association

Do you want to increase your confidence and skills in working with children with SEND?

Portage Workshop training can help early years practitioners meet the needs of families and children with SEND using the Portage model and Portage principles. Portage is traditionally a home visiting educational service for children under 5 with SEND, working in close partnership with parents.

The National Portage Association is the umbrella organisation supporting Portage services, Portage workers and parents. Portage Workshops delivered by NPA Accredited Trainers offer training and support to the early years workforce to develop their skills, knowledge and confidence to support children with SEND & their families.

In areas with little or no access to Portage the NPA may be able to offer FREE training including a Portage Awareness Workshop and a Portage Workshop.

NPA Stamp of Approval

This is a new award available to early years settings (including registered childminders and foster carers) whose staff have completed Portage Workshop training and demonstrate that they deliver high quality, inclusive early education based on the Portage model & Portage principles.

Children’s Food Trust

The Children’s Food Trust in partnership with 4children have created three new resources for early years settings to help them promote and support healthy eating, produce and share allergen information and catering for special dietary requirements, these resources are free to download from the Children’s Food Trust website from here

Promoting and supporting healthy eating – A guide for early years settings in England: Ofsted’s new Common Inspection Framework includes a judgment on personal development, behaviour and welfare. As part of reaching this judgment, inspectors will look at the extent to which early years settings successfully support and encourage children and their parents/carers to gain “knowledge of how to keep themselves healthy,” and “evidence of a whole setting approach to healthy eating”. This best practice guidance has been developed in partnership with 4children to help early years settings adopt and demonstrate a whole setting approach to healthy eating.

Producing and sharing allergen information – A guide for early years settings in England: this factsheet explains the new allergen labelling requirements, which were introduced in December 2014. It outlines the changes and provides information about how early years settings can meet them.

Catering for special dietary requirements: A guide for early years settings in England: this factsheet outlines the legal requirements and best practice for early years settings when providing food and drinks for children with allergies, intolerances and other special dietary requirements.

The Communication Trust are really interested to hear examples of how you have been using your EYPP to support children’s speech, language and communication, to help their work supporting the early years workforce around use of the EYPP. Learning Together About Learning EYPP project

Dissemination events from the project’s local networks will take place at a series of events in the spring. These events will enable network participants to share their learning in an informal ‘Knowledge Café’ style. Some events will include visits or seminars in addition.  Dates and locations are as follows:
