Exploring Mathematics in the Early Years should be fun for both children and practitioners. But sometimes it can be hard to know where to begin and where to find out more.
Throughout September 2019, National Numeracy are calling on everyone to check their numeracy skills, as part of an initiative called ‘Checktember’.
The National Numeracy Challenge is an online resource to help anyone assess their numeracy and get help to improve. The Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust has been using the resource with staff across all three of their nurseries. Initially a way to provide extra support for apprentices with maths qualifications, they soon embedded it across the entire workforce. Now everyone, including management, is being encouraged to achieve their National Numeracy Challenge certificate.

This set of resource materials is intended to help practitioners working with children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), and teachers working with lower Key Stage 1 children, to plan their mathematics provision and help children to secure some of the key mathematical ideas that they will use throughout the rest of their lives. The materials have a strong focus on Number, particularly counting, and the children’s developing understanding of the patterns that underpin early work within this aspect of mathematics.
This booklet focuses on children’s mathematical development, which is explored in the area of learning and development entitled Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy in the Early Years Foundation Stage.
