The progress check at age two involves practitioners reviewing a child’s progress and providing parents and/or carers with a short written summary of their child’s development in the prime areas:

  • communication and language
  • personal, social and emotional development
  • physical development

It is up to you what further information, beyond the prime areas, you would like to include within the summary.

The progress check at age two should be informed by:

  • your own expert professional judgement and knowledge of the child
  • the voice of the child;
  • the views of the child’s parents and/or carers; and
  • the views of any other professionals where appropriate.

You do not need to spend a long time away from interacting with the children to complete the check. For the progress check at age two, you may choose to use the example format below, use an integrated format from your local authority or create your own. The example format shows one way to complete the check without an excessive number of examples or ‘tracking data’.
