Kelly Tolhurst, Minister for Schools and Childhood, has announced a boost of up to £180 million for the Early Years sector to support children’s development.

Thousands of early year professionals will benefit from the new package of support that will drive quality and growth across the sector and support the next generation.

Early Years Practitioners are now able to access:

  • Continuing professional development, with training on:
    • Child development
    • Leadership of settings
    • Supporting caregivers in their home learning environment
  • Additional funding for qualifications, including:
    • Graduate-level specialist training leading to early years teacher status
    • Accredited level 3 early years SENCO qualification
  • Support and guidance to early years settings through:
    • Experts and mentors training

In addition, we are expanding our successful Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI) programme. NELI has already benefitted two-thirds of primary schools, improving the speech and language skills of an estimated 90,000 children in reception classes. We are also launching a consultation on new criteria for the level 3 qualification in response to feedback from the sector.

Later in the year Early Years Practitioners will be able to access:

  • Training on communication, language, early mathematics and personal, social and emotional development training
  • Stronger practice hubs which will support settings to adopt evidence-based practice improvements

Detail on funding and how to access the training and support can be found on our new GOV.UK page.
