The expectation is that children move with their peers so they will be assessed against the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Profile once, at the end of the academic year in which they turn 5. In exceptional circumstances, a child might remain in EYFS provision beyond this.

In these exceptional cases, assessment should continue throughout the child’s time within EYFS provision, and the Profile should be completed once only. The school should discuss their intention to defer the child’s statutory assessment with their local authority. This will ensure the child’s data is not considered missing when the school submits EYFS Profile outcomes for the current cohort.

The flow chart below will help you understand when to complete the EYFS Profile for a child who remains in EYFS provision.
